BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Osmo Vanska
The Chief Conductor of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Osmo Vanska (born in 1953), has made his way all the way to the top during the past few years as one of the most prominent conductors in the world. In the autumn 2003 he started as the Music Director of the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra, regarded as one of the best orchestras in the United States. Vanska continues simultaneously his work in Lahti.


Vanska has conducted approximately 50 recordings, among of which, are the highly praised and awarded Sibelius recordings with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra for BIS Records. Osmo Vanska's music career began by playing the clarinet and he completed his studies in conducting at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki in 1979. His international career started in 1982 when he won the international conducting competition in Besançon, France.


Internationally in demand as a guest conductor, Vanska's US orchestra invitations include the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Boston Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony and National Symphony Orchestra. Across the Atlantic he leads orchestras such as the Munich Philharmonic, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Czech Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Orchestre National de France, Oslo Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and BBC Symphony. He has also led numerous orchestras in Japan (e.g. Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo) and Sydney Symphony in Australia also feature in his cross-continental schedule. During the next couple of seasons he will also lead e.g. the Berliner Philharmoniker and London Philharmonic.

Many years of persistent work under the leadership of Conductor Osmo Vanska; has made the Lahti Symphony Orchestra one of the most renowned orchestras of the Nordic countries. The Lahti Symphony Orchestra's home concert hall is located at the Sibelius Hall in Lahti, a wooden congress and concert centre completed in March 2000. The orchestra's new home concert hall has outstanding acoustics that are considered one of the best internationally. Sibelius Hall has provided the Lahti Symphony Orchestra more opportunities to expand its authentic sound. The Lahti Symphony Orchestra wants to guarantee that all of its performances create enjoyable experiences for audiences, regardless of whether they are playing a symphony, concertos, the Beatles, popular music, classical favorites, or modern compositions.
