BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Charles Dutoit
Captivating audiences throughout the world, Charles Dutoit is one of today’s most sought-after conductors, having performed with all the major orchestras on most stages of the five continents. Presently artistic director and principal conductor of London’s Royal Philharmonic. He collaborates every season with the orchestras of Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles and is also a regular guest on the stages in London, Berlin, Paris, Munich, Moscow, Sydney, Beijing, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, among others. His more than 200 recordings for Decca, Deutsche Grammophon, EMI, Philips, and Erato have garnered multiple awards and distinctions including two Grammys.

For 25 years Mr. Dutoit was artistic director of the Montreal Symphony, a dynamic musical team recognised the world over. From 1991 to 2001 he was music director of the Orchestre National de France, and in 1996 he was appointed principal conductor and soon thereafter music director of the NHK Symphony in Tokyo. He is today music director emeritus of that orchestra. He was for 10 years music director of The Philadelphia Orchestra’s season at the Mann Music Center, and for 21 years at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

Mr. Dutoit’s interest in the younger generation has always held an important place in his career and he has successively been music director of the Sapporo Pacific Music Festival and the Miyazaki International Music Festival in Japan, as well as the Canton International Summer Music Academy in Guangzhou, China. In 2009 he became music director of the Verbier Festival Orchestra. When still in his early 20s, Mr. Dutoit was invited by Herbert von Karajan to conduct at the Vienna State Opera. He has since conducted at Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, the Rome Opera, and the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) is a British orchestra based in London. It tours widely, and is sometimes called "Britain's national orchestra".

The RPO was founded in 1946 by Thomas Beecham and played its first concert in Croydon on September 15, 1946. Beecham was principal conductor until his death in 1961. He was followed by then assistant conductor Rudolf Kempe, who was given the title of Conductor for Life in 1970. Subsequent musical directors and principal conductors have been Antal Doráti (1975-78), Walter Weller (1980-85), André Previn (1985-92), Vladimir Ashkenazy (1987-94). Yuri Temirkanov was appointed principal conductor in 1992, and Daniele Gatti music director in 1996.

The orchestra toured the United States in 1950, thus becoming the first British orchestra to visit America since the London Symphony Orchestra in 1912. As well as performing works from the classical repertoire, the RPO has recorded a number of film scores, including those for Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's The Red Shoes.

Associated with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, which is devoted to playing lighter classics. It was formed in 1987.
