BRIEF INTRODUCTION

A Midsummer Night's Dream was written at a time, near the end of the 16th Century, when England was in the midst of huge social, economic, and cultural change. This energy and spirit of transformation is expressed in the play through the experiences of the characters and the way in which different worlds rub up against each other to create excitement, curiosity, chaos and joy in equal measure.

Shakespeare was distinct in his time for giving a voice to people across the social spectrum, but he didn't stop there. The play dramatises a Fairy Kingdom in a forest, which is perhaps not surprising when you consider this was a time when people made sure they covered their heads when they went outside after dark in case the moon provoked a kind of madness in them.

But perhaps the strongest belief within the play is in the power of the imagination, which travels across all ages and cultures, and has been the starting point for our production: 'imagination bodies forth the form of things unknown'.
