The Guangzhou Ballet
The Guangzhou Ballet, established in January 1994, is headed by famous dancer Zhang Dandan who is also Artistic Director of the Ballet.

Since its establishment, the Guangzhou Ballet has staged quite a lot of ballet classics including Coppelia, Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Giselle etc., defining its performing style as rigorous and orthodox. Besides, it also embraces memorable works by modern choreographers, such as Anna Karenina, The Lady of the Camellias, symphonic ballet Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2, which demonstrates the great vitality and diversity of the Ballet.

The Guangzhou Ballet stands head and shoulders in following Chinese traditions. It rearranges and performs a series of Chinese ballets such as Lanhuahua, Goddess of the Luo River, Celestial Phoenix, Mei Lanfang, Dreaming Red Mansions, Turandot , and Chinese-style symphonic ballets including Yellow River, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai (The Butterfly Lovers), as well as Violin Concerto No.1, revealing its unique style of art and passion for creation.

Meanwhile, the Ballet has attached great importance to talent development. By inviting specialists and celebrated ballet tutors both at home and abroad for training and programming, the troupe has maintained its vigor and vitality, gradually formed a mature artistic style and fostered a good number of exceptional dancers, winning wide attention in the ballet circles both domestically and internationally.

As far as international exchange is concerned, Guangzhou Ballet has also done an excellent job. It has given extraordinary performances in countries and regions, such as Russia, UK, US, Canada, France, Australia, Italy, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Finland, Peru, Cuba, Japan, South Korean, Mongolia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, enhancing the influence of Chinese ballet in the international arena.

SYNOSIS

The beautiful and pure rural girl Giselle, who loves dancing, lives in a small mountain village with her mother. The ranger Hans is in pursuit of the lovely girl. But Giselle doesn't like him. Earl Albrecht disguises himself as a peasant and comes to the village for fun.

Giselle falls in love with Albrecht. Taking his daughter Bathilde and the nobles, Duke heads to the valley to hunt. Passing by Giselle's house, they are warmly received by Giselle. To express her gratitude, Bathilde gifts Giselle a valuable necklace.

To prevent Giselle and Albrecht's relationship, Hans searches out Albrecht's sword and horn from the house, proves Albert's original identity as a noble and attempts to convince Giselle not to be deceived. Giselle announces that she has fallen in love with Albrecht; while Bathilde shows an engagement ring to reveal her upcoming marriage between Albrecht and her.

Blasted by the unexpected blow, Giselle throws away the necklace and dies bitterly.

In the forest cemetery, hovered with cold moon and chilly wind, a bunch of unfortunate maidens (Wilis) seek their opportunities for revenge, since they are abandoned by heartless fiancés before death. They have repeatedly surrounded young men who walk into the forest and force them to dance, until they die with exhaustion.

At night, Hans comes to the cemetery and is surrounded by the Wilis. Then he dies in the punishment.

Suffered by endless pain and regret, Albrecht comes to Giselle's grave and pours out his innermost feelings. The Wilis approach him and want to kill him. Kindhearted Giselle helps out and Albrecht survives.

The clock strikes the dawn. Giselle and the ghosts fade away. Albrecht is filled with infinite sadness. He loses a pure and faithful love forever.
