ABOUT

The Monteverdi programme performed by Magdalena Kozena and the Basel La Cetra baroque orchestra conducted by Andrea Marcon constitutes a unique and significant shift from a regular concert recital to a theatrical performance which will also exceed the framework of so-called semi-theatrical performances thanks to the stage design, costumes, lighting and in particular the acting. “As well as arias by Monteverdi, the first section also contains two works which deviate from the usual concert framework in their form and interpretation. However, we want this to be a surprise, so we will not reveal any more. The second section contains an essentially regular theatrical performance of Monteverdi’s dramatic scene Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda – the Duel of Tancred and Clorinda,” is how the director, Ondrej Havelka, describes this quite exceptional production. Magdalena will sing and play all three characters in the piece, i.e. Clorinda, Tancred and the narrator. It is therefore a kind of baroque operatic one-woman show. “The idea for me to sing all three roles came from Andrea Marcon few years ago; I have already sung the Duel like this several times and I have also recorded it for a new CD. But for all that, it seemed to me that a concert performance with a single soloist would be overly chaotic and that this has been made for a theatrical performance. I therefore contacted my long-time friend and the excellent director, Ondrej Havelka, and the project was launched!”

Havelka said the following with regard to his directorial concept: “As far as the external accoutrements are concerned, we have taken inspiration take from baroque theatre; by that I mean the costumes or the typical shell-shaped lights on the leading edge of the stage, for example. However, Magdalena’s actual performance has been inspired more by the folk actors or conjurers who set up an improvised stage somewhere in the marketplace and told the public stories. They played all the characters with true emotion and at the same time they would also go out of character and comment on the characters’ motives and actives,” continued Havelka, who is also the librettist of another of the performed works, Ariadne has a problem. The composer Marko Ivanovic took his inspiration for this work from Monteverdi’s aria Lamento di Arianna and it had its world premiere on 24.2.16 in Prague. It formed a kind of bridge between the baroque works and Luciano Berio’s Sequenza III dating from 1965 which Magdalena has incorporated into the programme: “Berio’s Sequenza may sound to listeners like playful vocal improvisation, but in reality every sound has been precisely noted in the music. This is one of the most demanding works I have every studied," revealed Kozena.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Magdalena Kozena (Mezzo-soprano)
One of the leading mezzo-sopranos of her generation, Magdalena Kozena was born in Brno and studied in her hometown and in Bratislava.

Her recital appearances have taken her to London, Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Amsterdam,Vienna, Tokyo, San Francisco, to New York’s Alice Tully and Carnegie halls, and the leading European festivals – working with pianists including Daniel Barenboim, Yefim Bronfman, Malcolm Martineau, András Schiff and Mitsuko Uchida.

In concert, she has collaborated with many of the world’s foremost orchestras, including the Berlin, Vienna, Rotterdam and Czech Philharmonic orchestras, the Philadelphia and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestras and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. She has worked with conductors including Sir Simon Rattle, Mariss Jansons, Gustavo Dudamel, Bernard Haitink, Jiri Belohlavek, Sir Roger Norrington and Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

La Cetra Barockorchester & Vokalensemble Basel
Founded in 1999 at the initiative of Dr. Peter Reidemeister, then Director of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, La Cetra Barockorchester Basel rapidly became recognized internationally as one of the leading ensembles in historically informed performance practice. The name La Ceptra refers to the ancient lyre or zither, and is taken from the title of Antonio Vivaldi’s collection of 12 violin concertos Op. 9 first published in Amsterdam in 1727.

The musicians are for the most part graduates of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, the Swiss elite training centre for early music. A close collaboration with the research department of the Schola Cantorum provides opportunities for programming and musical preparation supported by the most up to date musicological research. The discovery of works by composers such as Brescianello, Venturini or Paisiello and others has greatly enriched the orchestra’s repertoire which ranges from the early 17th century works of Monteverdi through to symphonies of the classical and early romantic periods. Artistic Director of La Cetra since 2009, Andrea Marcon is known internationally as one of the preeminent conductors of Baroque and early Classical repertoire. He has brought new impulses and a fresh approach to the rich and often neglected repertoire of the period. Antonio Caldara’s La Concordia de’ pianeti was rediscovered by Marcon and performed for the first time in nearly 300 years in concert in Dortmund, Germany. On that occasion, it was also recorded for the Deutsche Grammophon label.

La Cetra has worked regularly with a number of well-known guest conductors, among them Jordi Savall, Rene Jacobs, Attilio Cremonesi or Gustav Leonhard, as well as soloists such as Andreas Scholl, Vivica Genaux, Magdalena Kozena, Patricia Petibon or Giuliano Carmignola, to name a few. The repertoire and the occasion determine the size of the orchestra. This can go from a smaller Consort to a full-fledged orchestra with chorus and soloists.
