BRIEF INTRODUCTION
The Dance Drama Yongle Palace, based on the first batch of nationally protected key cultural relics in Ruicheng, Shanxi, takes the relocation of Yongle Palace in the 1950s caused by the construction of the Sanmenxia water project as its narrative mainline. In a dialogue spanning more than seven hundred years, it links four sections that reflect four aesthetic dimensions: 'ancient architecture, murals, glazed tiles, and heritage.'
In the 1951 nationwide cultural relic survey, Yongle Palace reemerged into the world. Contemporary architects and the ancient overseer from 1247 connected in spirit, witnessing the grand ambition of the palace to 'observe and guide people, seizing the moment' amid turbulent history;
In 1325, the murals of Sanqing Hall, 'Chaoyuan Tu,' were completed. The female painter of the Yuan Dynasty, who was kept out the door, used life as her brush and imagination as her scroll, painting her own prayers for life into the Jade Maid Immortal ranks of 'Chaoyuan Tu,' resonating with the long-cherished aspirations of the artists who came in 1957 to copy the murals.
Around 1956, devoted glass artisans and the more than 700-year-old Old Horn God, in a dreamlike companionship, together restored the long-lost technique of peacock blue glazed glass, continuing the vow of protection.
From 1956 to 1966, during the reconstruction of Yongle Palace, the movers—whose average age was under thirty—spent a decade of their youth 'competing with Sanmenxia and racing against the Yellow River,' lifting beams and painted mortise-and-tenon structures with their hands, ultimately giving Yongle Palace a new lease on life.
The work combines modern visuals with traditional aesthetics, transforming ancient relics and architecture into a poetic language of movement, creating a stage vocabulary of 'synchronized time and space.' With the theme of inheritance, 'celebrating the new year together, sharing the art of painting,' it highlights the enduring spiritual strength of Chinese culture across the land of Shanxi.
