BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center is not only the only national-class professional drama group in Shanghai, but also one of the best drama groups in China. The Center converges a large number of professional playwrights, directors, performers, stage artists and other creation personnel, with three different-size and full-featured professional performance theaters. Every year, it originates and introduces about 600 various performances by means of exchange to attract more than 100,000 domestic and foreign audiences. Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center is committed to embracing domestic and foreign artists with own broad and inclusive characteristics; attracting more audiences with content-rich stage works in various forms; and exerting joint efforts of all personnel to develop itself into a modernized world-class theater with international reputation and lofty status corresponding to the metropolis Shanghai.

Founded on January 23, 1995, Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center is merged by two well-known drama performing groups, the former Shanghai People's Art Theater (founded in 1950) and Shanghai Youth Drama Troupe (founded in 1957). Shanghai People's Art Theater and Shanghai Youth Drama Troupe were respectively established by famous dramatists Xia Yan, Huang Zuolin and Xiong Foxi during early days of the New China. In several decades, both groups successively staged about 500 Chinese and Western classics, as well as modern and contemporary works.

Since its inception in 1995, the Center continues creation and rehearsal of new dramas, launches many nationwide tour events, and wins Plum Blossom Award, Golden Lion Award, Magnolia Award and other national-class awards in terms of repertoire, playwright, director, performer, choreography and other various aspects. In addition, it focuses on expanding cultural exchanges with other countries and learning experience in creating outstanding dramas around the world. In the past decade, it has staged about 100 ancient, modern, Chinese and foreign works, and carries out various cooperation and visiting performances with the artists from the countries and regions among others, UK, the US, France, Australia, Canada, Russia, Japan, Singapore, Romania, Austria, Italy, South Korea, Ireland, Egypt, Germany, Turkey, Hong Kong and Taiwan. It participates in such international art festivals as Moscow Chekhov International Drama Festival, Singapore International Drama Festival, the Ninth Seoul Performing Arts Festival, British International Shakespeare Festival and Sibiu International Drama Festival. It is highly praised by the art communities at home and abroad, and causes a strong sensation in different countries and regions. With the continuous introduction of foreign original plays and production of excellent contemporary drama works, it has cultivated a solid drama performance market in Shanghai, which further magnetizes nationwide and worldwide drama groups to perform here.

In recent years, Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center also bears fruits in drama education campaign and public welfare. Since 2004, it launches annual Shanghai College Students’ Drama Festival. Since 2005, it holds Shanghai International Contemporary Drama Season with self-raised funds.
